Our Top Mississippi River Views

The Mississippi River has helped create not only the landscape of the United States, but also the culture and industry of the lands surrounding it.  Galena is only 3 miles away as the crow flies and as close as a 15 minute drive.  Make sure to add this iconic river to your plans the next time you visit!

Casper Bluffs

Of all the vantage points for viewing the Mississippi River, this is the closest to Aldrich Guest House.  Just a 7 minute drive, you'll find Casper Bluffs, a Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation Land and Water Reserve.  To get the best river views, from the wooden kiosk, take the trail to the right.  Just past the Lion's picnic pavilion, the trees open up and you'll get some excellent views, especially when the trees are changing colors.

Also, Casper Bluffs has several mounds from the Native Americans that date to over 1,000 years ago.  One of the most impressive is the Thunderbird Effigy Mound which can be found by taking the trail to the left of the welcome kiosk.  Of course, while hiking, please be respectful and stay off the mounds.

Mississippi Palisades State Park

About a 40 minute drive from Aldrich Guest House is the Mississippi Palisades State Park located near Savanna, IL.  After enjoying the ride, more than half of which is right along the river, you'll see signs for two different entrances.  The North Entrance to the park leads to easier and more maintained trails while the South Entrance leads to trails that are a bit more rugged and feature more elevation changes.

Regardless of which entrance you take, finding amazing views overlooking the Mississippi won't be hard! Take a look at the Park Map to see where some of the best photo opportunities are.

Chestnut Mountain

While Chestnut Mountain feels like our personal winter playground since we love skiing, we're always stunned by the river views all year long here.

At this location, the river is one mile wide from bank to bank and you can really take in the beauty of all the rolling hills, trees, and farms.  There are two main overlooks here, a North and a South.  The trails getting to both of them are pretty level so no need for a hiking stick!

Eagle Point Park

Just over in Dubuque, Eagle Point Park may offer some of our favorite views of the Mississippi.  Looking directly north or south along the river, all you see is uninterrupted views of nature.  Look straight down and you'll see Lock and Dam No. 11 - if it's shipping season, you can watch the barges lock through!

Only a 20 minute ride from Aldrich Guest House, this is a great stop, especially if you're in Dubuque visiting the Mississippi River Museum or the Mathias Ham House.

We're huge fans of the nature that's all around Galena and the Mississippi River is one of the highlights.  Being so close to an American icon is a very special opportunity and it's easy to make it part of your visit to Galena.  When you're here, we'll make sure to give you even more inside tips when you decide where your vantage point is going to be to see the Mighty Mississippi!
