Take a hike!

We think that one of the best parts of Galena is all of the opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors and there's not many better ways to enjoy nature than going on a hike!

Continue reading for some of our insider tips on what it's like and click the button below for some pre-planned itineraries we've made for you.

A hike for everyone

With so many wildlife and hiking areas to choose from, there are options for everyone and for every itinerary from short, level, improved trails to half-day and day long hikes that take you through the woods, up bluffs, and to stunning overlooks.
Getting outdoors in Galena and the surrounding area, you'll be surrounded by nature and some of the native species of plants, trees, and animals. The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation is a great resource that protects lands and showcases the unique geography that we have in the driftless region. At many of these preserves you can hike through native prairie, see birds ranging from hummingbirds to bald eagles and blue birds to scarlet tanagers. You may also come across foxes, otters, groundhogs, or deer among many other creatures.

Mississippi River Views

Another unique feature of our landscape is the Mississippi River. At many of the best hiking spots, there are great views of this American icon. Some of the best views are from Casper Bluffs or Chestnut Mountain (both in Galena), Mississippi Palisades (40 minutes south in Savanna, IL), Eagle Point Park and Mines of Spain (both in Dubuque, IA approximately 20 minutes away).

Rest and Relaxation

Regardless of where you choose to hike, you are guaranteed a quiet and relaxing time. While many great hiking spots are only a 5-20 minute drive from Aldrich Guest House, with some even within walking distance, you'll feel like you're worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You will have time to reflect and recharge, you'll find yourself breathing in the fresh and clean air, and you will experience just how calming being outside can really be.

Here are some of our tips to make sure you have the best time possible during your time outdoors:
  • Bug Spray: We recommend the all-natural products such as Buggins, Bug Soothe, or Maggie's Farm
  • Sunscreen: While the stuff with chemicals may be convenient, using a mineral-based sunscreen is more efficient and safer. And if you spend an extra minute or two rubbing it in, you'll even avoid the white sheen they can sometimes leave.
  • Water: Bring lots of this! Each room has reusable stainless steel bottles that you can use while you're with us.  They're also for sale with all proceeds going towards green initiatives at Aldrich.
  • Food: Whether it's GORP or a full on picnic, you're sure to work up an appetite. For a great option, check out Galena River Wine and Cheese where they can pack a picnic lunch for you to take on the go.
  • Attire: Sturdy shoes, long pants, a hat, and sunglasses will all make your hike more enjoyable and safer. Of course, consider the weather when deciding on rain and cold weather gear.
  • Phone/Camera: While we are often getting into nature to remove ourselves from technology, you may want to bring along your phone for the camera since you never know what beauty you might encounter. A phone can also come in handy for emergencies or as a GPS if you find yourself turned around.

And of course, after your day of outdoor fun, our evening Happy Hour is a great way to relax and recharge before you head back out for some of the great restaurants that Galena has to offer!
